Jeuveau
is a botulinum toxin type A injection used in the treatment
of facial wrinkles. It’s also sometimes called
the new Botox or “Newtox” for short because
it’s
a new version of the same active ingredient used in
original Botox
Cosmetic injections.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Jeuveau for the treatment of wrinkles in February 2019. It’s a new type of botulinum toxin A injection.
Other injectables in the same class include:
Both Botox and Jeuveau contain the active ingredient botulinum toxin type A. This is neurotoxin that works by relaxing muscles beneath the skin. When used as a wrinkle treatment, these types of injections create a smoother appearance in the skin.
Botox was first approved for cosmetic use in 2002. It’s used to treat frown lines or glabellar lines (the wrinkles between your eyebrows), along with horizontal forehead lines and crow’s feet (wrinkles at the corners of your eyes).
While
Jeuveau shares some similarities with Botox, there are
key characteristics that make this injection stand apart
from other botulinum toxin injections.
One of the significant differences between Botox Cosmetics and Jeuveau is the
packaging process. Botox Cosmetic is packaged as a frozen crystals whereas Jeauveau
is manufactured using a vacuum dried packaging process. This means none of the
Jeaveau product denaturates and antibodies are not formed against the molecules
( a rare event with Botox).
While both injections have the same active ingredient, the precise formulas vary slightly. Deciding between Botox and Jeuveau may depend on trial and error. Some people respond better to one over the other.
However, Jeuveau may be a better option if you’re new to botulinum toxin injections and are looking for a newer technology product.
It’s
also the best option if you’re looking to treat
glabellar lines. Botox is used for these same wrinkles,
along with other types of facial lines.
When compared to Botox, Jeuveau appears to work a day or two sooner. As far as duration goes, it lasts about the same as Botox and Dysport, 3-4 months. However, there is variability from patient to patient with all neurotoxins. It should last roughly the same duration as Botox according to the studies.
It is prudent to follow some simple guidelines before treatment that can make all the difference between a fair and great result, by reducing some possible side effects associated with the injections. We realize that this is not always possible. However, minimizing these risks is always desirable.
Avoid Alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours prior to treatment (Alcohol may thin the blood increasing risk of bruising.
Avoid Anti-inflammatory / Blood Thinning medications ideally, for a period of two (2) weeks before treatment. Medications and supplements such as Aspirin, Vitamin E, Ginkgo Biloba, St. John's Wort, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, Vioxx, and other NSAIDS are all blood thinning and can increase the risk of bruising/swelling after injections.
Schedule Jeuveau® appointment at least 2 weeks prior to a special event which may be occurring, i.e., wedding, vacation, etc. etc. It is not desirable to have a very special event occurring and be bruised from an injection which could have been avoided.
The guidelines to follow post treatment have been followed for years, and are still employed today to prevent the possible side effect of ptosis. These measures should minimize the possibility of ptosis almost 98%.
No straining, heavy lifting, vigorous exercise for 4 hours following treatment. It is now known that it takes the toxin approximately 4 hours to bind itself to the nerve to start its work, and because we do not want to increase circulation to that area to wash away the Jeuveau® from where it was injected. This waiting period continues to be recommended by most practitioners.
Avoid Manipulation of area for 4 hours following treatment. (For the same reasons listed above.) This includes not doing a facial, peel, or micro-dermabrasion after treatment with Jeuveau®. A facial, peel, or micro-dermabrasion can be done in same appointment only if they are done before the Jeuveau®.
It can take 2-7 days to take full effect. It is recommended that patient contact office no later than 2 weeks after treatment if desired effect was not achieved.
Makeup can be applied before leaving the office. Retin-A, Glycolic acid, Vitamin C, and Kinerase can be used, but avoiding (for 24 hrs) the treated areas.
